The first 500 million years of Earth’s history are known as the Hadean, a word derived from Hades, the Greek underworld. Geologists gave this name to the planet’s earliest era because they imagined it as a true hellscape: volcanoes, rivers of lava, meteorites, and chaos everywhere. There is hardly any trace left from that time, so it remains a great mystery — but according to theory, such an environment could not have supported even the slightest trace of life… Or could it?
